THE HIDDEN TRACK

The following passages are dedicated to Leopold, to the vernacular, to certain evil women (you know who you are), to certain wonderful people(they know who they are), to soft afternoons and quiet Sunday evenings, to Fall and seeing your breath for the first time since Spring, and to Isabelle Ya Feng ... a soul slipped by like two ships passing in the still, moonlit sea.

The Formal Introduction...

"Mr. Philson?"
"Yes?"
"My name is Elijah sir..."
"Why, hello Elijah."
"...you fail to recall me sir?"
"Indeed I must say, I am at quite a loss son."
"I am safety upon which you often call."
"Is that right? Well, son again, I am afraid I simply do not..."
"How did your child recover from her fever Mr. Philson? What was that now... but only three night past?"
"Boy, should this be some sort of racket why, I'll locate your father and ensure a certain punishment. Where exactly..."
"Please calm yourself Mr. Philson, for my father is none but a mass of energy that controls dimensions beyond that of your own comprehension. Now, back to your safety inquiries Mr. Philson... you do recall yes?"
"I-I-I'm confused. It's just that..."
"Again, please remain calm Mr. Philson. I do understand that these interactions can, at times, be somewhat startling for folks, but I assure you I speak on behalf of legions with whom know you more than you know yourself and who love you beyond limitations that your earthly mother should ever strive to identify.... You do recall me now do you not?"
"I do son, I do indeed."
"Fine sir, fine. Let us start over, shall we say? My name is Elijah, Elijah Moore. I am no angel nor a ghost of any nature... although I must admit sir, I have always wanted to walk through a wall, or play a harp while resting upon a cloud!"
"I see...umm... that is, I..."
"I am sorry Mr. Philson, I have gotten off track. The purpose of this introduction is simple sir: You are to accompany me for a little while. I am charged with detaining you for a small amount of time."
"Detain me? Whatever for boy? I am largely confused and frankly rather shaken by this moment."
"It is rather alarming sir, yet I assure you sir I mean not 'detain' in any captive. Rather, I am to orientate you for a short while, until you are aware of the realities of your situation."
"My situation?"
"Your situation Mr. Philson."
"Has anything happened to my family Elijah?"
"Indeed not sir, your family is perfectly safe. To the contrary Mr. Philson, you were involved in a motorcar collision - on that roadway just behind you..."
"... I do not know exactly what to make of all of this. I am rather befuddled momentarily."
"Please do not worry yourself Mr. Philson. Say, do you recall not less than two years ago when you had a significant bout with your lungs during a case of pneumonia?"
"I do son, I do."
"You spoke to me for nearly 14 seconds on the evening of your highest fever, and I informed you that you and I were not slated to meet formerly just yet. You recall this moment sir?"
"I do Elijah. Vividly."
"Mr. Philson, you have every right to be startled and of course worried for your family; however, fear not sir, for I am with you."
"Elijah, I am frightened."
"As you should be Mr. Philson."
"Shall this feeling pass son?"
"It shall indeed sir; with time"
"Won't I have the opportunity to bid my wife goodbye?"
"I'm afraid that would do nothing but cause her to ache for you even more Mr. Philson. We do not what that do we sir?"
"Yes, I suppose not Elijah."
"...You shall speak with her again sir, I assure you of this."
"I shall?"
"You shall sir; in time."
"I don't even recall what happened on the roadway, I was simply going about my...."
"Mr. Philson, I mean not interrupt, but there is no need to concern yourself with that now. Shall we rest in the shade a while Mr. Philson? There is much to discuss?"
"Indeed Elijah."
"Wonderful."
"I feel strange Elijah...I..."
"Indeed Mr. Philson... please take my hand sir."
